The Problem With Third Parties

So a while back I posted about the need for a multiple party system to overtake our current focus on two primary parties. I’ve done some more research and I’ve found that maybe the problem isn’t the lack of multiple parties but that the problem is inherent in our “Winner Take All” system.

I also came across the idea of an “Alternative Voting” system that would most accurately represent the majority of citizens AND encourage multiple parties to compete and campaign. Honestly, I can’t explain it nearly as well as the following two videos. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

These videos make it pretty clear that under a “Winner Take All” system, a vibrant and varied discussion can’t truly take place and will mathematically result in a two party system all over again, even as different parties are introduced.

They also make pretty clear that if we eliminate the fear of our vote for an unlikely winner resulting in the election of someone we clearly don’t agree with, we’ll be free to vote based on values and this gives other parties’ candidates a greater voice. We need to fight for an overhaul of our electoral system, and after today, we’ve got four years to do it.
